Michigan Emergency Department Community Injury Information Network (MEDCIIN)

Funding Source: Michigan Department of Community Health

Project Period: 1999 - 2004

Project Coordinator: Cheribeth Tan-Schriner, PhD

The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) in collaboration with MPHI-CDMTR established and maintained a voluntary injury surveillance system called the Michigan Emergency Department Community Injury Information Network (MEDCIIN). From 1999 to 2004, the system relied on data contributed by a representative sample of 23 sentinel hospitals around the state to study the types and causes of injuries, and the demographic characteristics of people presenting in emergency departments (EDs) for injuries.

MPHI-CDMTR worked with hospitals to collect emergency department data, overcame technical barriers to participation, refined the processes for the surveillance system, and developed a long-term relationship with each hospital. As needed, MPHI-CDMTR provided technical documentation regarding specifications of the surveillance systems, processes for data abstraction, and data management protocols to MDCH. MPHI-CDMTR also analyzed data from 23 hospitals.
